History & Background

SternPowr Marine Drive Systems evolved from practical work on high-reliability propulsion for small commercial craft, patrol boats and specialist vessels. Early product lines focused on compact, serviceable stern drives with rugged gearcases and transom hardware. Over time that matured into a modular family—80, 90, 100 and 1000 Series—sharing common installation patterns and service parts to keep fleets standardised and easy to support.

STERNPOWR — HISTORY, FLEET USE & SUPPORT SternPowr stern drives were built around a simple brief: inboard torque and reliability with the shallow draft, trim control and steerability of an outdrive. The design philosophy was always “service first”—common transom patterns, shared seals and bearings, and gearcases that can be stripped dockside. That thinking produced a modular family (80/90/100/1000 Series) used on workboats, patrol craft, rescue RIBs and survey vessels, with parts codified under CAGE/NCAGE U2917. UK HISTORY Lancing Marine imported SternPowr into the UK from Marine Drive Systems in New Jersey, USA. That link brought rugged, serviceable stern-drive packages to British operators and fleets.
FLEET USE The 100 Series was used extensively on Pacific 22 RIBs carried by the Royal Navy on destroyer-class vessels and above. The stern-drive fit was later superseded as Halmatic transitioned the programme to the Atlantic 24. WHAT WE SUPPORT TODAY Lancing Marine continues to keep SternPowr fleets running and is the go-to source for replacements and hard-to-obtain parts. We stock many items in the UK, including complete, ready-to-install drive units. Typical inventory covers: – Upper/lower cases, matched bevel gearsets, strengthened yokes, bearing carriers – Shafts, couplings, propellers and hardware (keys, pins, retaining rings) – Full seal kits, O-rings, gaskets, corrosion-preventive anodes – Electro-hydraulic trim/tilt cylinders and LP/HP hose sets – Transom plates, bell housings, bearings (roller/tapered/sleeve) and bushings Order by NSN, MFG SKU or item name; we cross-reference legacy numbers and provide documentation/traceability. Exchange options and rapid despatch available where stock allows.
NEW APPLICATIONS For new builds and repowers, Lancing Marine now recommends Castoldi waterjet propulsion—especially for commercial and military duty—owing to shallow-draft manoeuvrability, crew safety at the stern, strong crash-stop performance and predictable lifecycle cost.
BOTTOM LINE If it’s SternPowr, talk to Lancing Marine first. We hold the parts knowledge, the stock, and the complete units to keep these drives earning—and we’ll specify Castoldi waterjets where a modern jet is the better answer for tomorrow. Sources

SternPowr Drive Series

80 Series
  1. Compact single-prop stern drive for light commercial duty and tight engine rooms.
  2. Optimised sealing/corrosion protection; simple service access.
  3. Typical uses: tenders, survey skiffs, light utility craft.
90 Series
  1. The “big” unit with a larger lower-unit casting to house a larger ring-and-pinion gear set and bigger bearings.
  2. Increased oil volume for heat management.
  3. Mid-duty package with heavier gearset and multiple ratios for hull/engine matching.
  4. Balanced performance and serviceability for daily operational cycles.
  5. Typical uses: inshore workboats, pilot boats, fast rescue craft.
100 Series
  1. Heavy-duty housings and a strengthened upper yoke.
  2. Heavy-duty geartrain and bearings; reinforced upper/lower cases and improved lubrication.
  3. Options for counter-rotation, jackshafts and custom transom hardware.
  4. Typical uses: patrol/interceptor craft, dive support, survey and utility vessels.
1000 Series
  1. High-output system for continuous commercial/defence service at elevated loads.
  2. Electro-hydraulic trim/tilt, heavy-duty transom assemblies; twin-installation ready.
  3. Integration support for mission equipment and demanding duty cycles.

Performance Lower Units

  1. Sport Lower with an extended, faired nose to improve inflow and reduce steering effort.
  2. Racing Lower with a sleeker case that carries the prop slightly farther aft for reduced drag.

Marine Drive Systems (USA)

Marine Drive Systems originally manufactured SternPowr in New Jersey USA. The focus is straightforward: shorten downtime, maintain commonality across fleets, and provide documentation that stands up to audit.

  1. Stock & supply: key wear components (gearsets, seals, bearings, anodes, hoses) and complete transom/trim kits aligned to the 80/90/100/1000 Series footprint.
  2. Rebuild & exchange: factory-authorised overhauls with exchange units to keep vessels in service; inspection reports and parts traceability provided.
  3. Application engineering: ratio selection, propeller matching, transom integration, and repower plans (templates, drilling patterns, interference checks).
  4. Test & QA: run-in procedures, oil analysis, vibration checks and acceptance records driven by an instrumentation-first approach.
  5. Documentation: installation guides, maintenance schedules, illustrated parts lists, and conformity certificates; packaging to customer spec (e.g., barcoding/ID labels, special preservation).
  6. Program support: multi-year spares planning, obsolescence management, and technical change control for government or fleet operators.

Product coverage (USA)

  1. Stern drives: 80 / 90 / 100 / 1000 Series (single and twin installations, counter-rotation options).
  2. Transom & trim: bell housings, transom plates, electro-hydraulic lift/trim cylinders and hose sets.
  3. Driveline: matched bevel gearsets, shafts, couplings, sleeve/roller/tapered bearings, bushings.
  4. Sealing & protection: gaskets, O-rings, toroidal seals, corrosion-preventive anodes.
  5. Ancillaries: propellers, key/pin hardware, retaining rings, fasteners.

Note: if you want the U.S. company’s legal name, UEI/D-U-N-S, address and service area shown here, send the exact details and I’ll slot them into this section.

Capabilities

  1. Design & Integration: transom integration, shaft-line alignment, corrosion control, propeller selection.
  2. Manufacture: precision machining and assembly for stern drives, gearcases and hardware with QA documentation.
  3. Support & MRO: overhaul, exchange units, spares, failure analysis and obsolescence management.
